A35 Framing Anchor: Universal Anchor with a Twist
A framing anchor is a simple widget used in the construction of frames to keep them aligned properly and anchored together. A framing anchor is the most effective and economical method of providing strong mechanical joints at timber connections.
A35 Framing Angles and Plates
The A35 framing anchor from Simpson Strong-Tie is exclusively designed to meet specific design requirements. Essentially, the A35 framing anchor utilizes “bending lines” -- a predetermined bending slot that allows for quick and easy field bends – in any two or three way tie applications. The A35 is balanced, and can be bent in either direction; all bend lines are completely reversible. Be careful, however, as this does not mean the angle should ever be bent more than once; it simply means that it can be bent in two directions. Bending any steel product more than once greatly increases the chances of metal fatigue and failure at loads below the listed maximum allowable loads.
As mentioned, the reversible design is ideal for a variety of different connections:
-
Trussed Rafters
-
Purlin Fixing
-
Joist Trimming
The A35 can be used singly or in combination if larger load resistance is necessary. When used in pairs the frame’s rotation is reduced.
It is always recommended that the A35 framing anchor be used with the manufacturer specified nails. 12-8d x 1 1/2" nails are used primarily, except for in certain framing connection situations where 9-8d x 1 1/2” nails are required. Other design considerations include some cantilever connections that require an A35 anchor on both sides, and roof connections – which require an increase in the load factor.
