Typically, the CS/CMST Coiled Straps are used as floor-to-floor ties, and are simple and easy to install. They are sold in approximately 40 pound coils that can be cut to length on the job site. When determining where to cut the length of the strap, it is simply calculated as twice the required end length added to the clear span. (The clear span, however, does not require any fastening.)

It is also important to make sure the CS/CMST Coiled Straps are positioned correctly on the stud, and that the stud is wide enough. Having nails too close to either the end (top) of the stud or the edge (side) of the stud can cause the nails to shear out, and not reach maximum allowable loads. Also make sure that the nails have penetrated deeply enough into the wood, or any eccentric load could cause the strap to separate (fall off). This eccentric load can be caused by a shifting of the stud walls or, more often, an outward buckling of the strap caused by shrinkage of the wood.

Non-eccentric loads are typically caused by uplift of the stud wall, and are the main design criteria. When CS/CMST Coiled Straps are installed vertically (which is quite frequent, considering most people enjoy their floors horizontal) the strap is designed for tension, and can typically reach the allowable loads by using half of the nail slots provided. Extra slots can be filled when seismic or wind loads are an issue.

Extra design provisions for CS/CMST Coiled Straps must be taken for lap splices (using two pieces overlapping, rather than one piece). Minimum splice length must be adhered to.

Overall, CS/CMST Coiled Straps are safe (no sharp edges) and quick (nail slots make for easy installation) and can meet a contractors needs in many timber system applications.
