LTP4 Lateral Tie Plate: General Info

A tie plate, including the LTP4 Lateral Tie Plate, is defined as any plate that holds together two components or parallel parts of any built-up section.  The LTP4 Lateral Tie Plate is a product offered by Simpson Strong-Tie that transfers shear forces for top plate-to-rim joist or blocking connections.

Nail holes are spaced to prevent wood splitting for single and double top plate applications.

One of the most advantageous features of the LTP4 Lateral Tie Plate is that it may be installed over plywood sheathing.  A unique design feature allows slight bending down any vertical or horizontal axis, which allows it to be fastened over thin sheathing (i.e. sitting flush against the rim joist and the plywood, even though the plywood can be up to ½’’ off the surface of the joist). However, it is important to note the load considerations this design will entail:

The LTP4 Lateral Tie Plate can be installed over 3/8" plywood with 8d x 1 1/2" nails and achieve 72% of the maximum allowable load, or over 1/2" plywood and achieve .64 of the listed load. 8d commons will achieve 100% load.

As always, it is highly recommended that the contractor fasten the LTP4 Lateral Tie Plate with the manufacturer suggested nails.

Transfer of shear forces is useful in a variety of different applications, since connections can experience shear due to both live, dead, wind, snow and earthquake loads.  The LTP4 Lateral Tie Plate is a very simple but useful and necessary connection aid, and not too small to for Simpson Strong-Tie to approach its design with an innovative attitude.
